Fiction Bar Review
Fiction bar is a rare entity in Nelson. It's a cocktail bar. Not only does it offer a premium range of sprits and cocktails, but it only has the one beer on tap.... and it's French. Fiction has been open for just over a year and has already drawn the attention of many national and local critics who applaud its vision and originality. It's primarily a one-man bar and like many you find in the bigger centres the small space starts filling pretty quickly. That's part of the charm of Fiction and as the night goes on the Nelson characters start turning up. The atmosphere of the bar is quite dependent on this late night crowd though as the bar space is kind of awkward and not conducive to intimate conversation.
The music here is an asset and would be one of the few places in Nelson where the DJ does his research and isn't playing the chart toppers. They play anything, but seem most comfortable playing dirty house music in the early hours of the morning.
The staff at Fiction seem to be selected on their funky urban look. Although they do look unique in their own individual way the theme running through is clear: young, hip, cool. The bartenders here are class and you know that no matter what you order you're going to be served a good drink.
The BarFly recommends that you wait until the early hours of the morning to check this place out. Fiction needs a few people in it to generate a vibe, don't let that put you off though as once this place starts humming decadence and debauchery are common place and everybody enjoys a good time.
